Now That’s What I Call a Musical, directed and choreographed by strictly legend Craig Revel Horwood, is a vibrant jukebox musical packed with the unforgettable hits of the 1980s. The story cleverly switches between 1989 and 2009, exploring how the choices and dreams of the past shape the lives of its characters in the present day. With camp as Christmas choreography, sharp humour, and a multi-talented cast the show is a joyous celebration of the power of music and nostalgia. The fantastic soundtrack and heartfelt story of best-friends make for a brilliant journey through time that’s sure to leave audiences singing along.
I couldn’t take my eyes off Lauren Hendricks, who was a standout as the delightfully eccentric teacher Ms Dorian, as well as several other ensemble roles. Her comic timing was spot-on, and she brought a brilliant, larger-than-life energy reminiscent of Melissa McCarthy. Utterly hilarious from start to finish, Hendricks had me—and the rest of the audience—howling with laughter.
Maia Hawkins shone as young April. I was stunned to learn this was her professional debut—she performed with the confidence and polish of someone who’s been treading the boards for years. Her talent is undeniable, and I can easily see her going on to be huge. Six and Heathers surely have her name written all over them. Fantastic work from a future leading lady.
Adult April was played by Melissa Jacques, who has an incredible set of lungs on her! She absolutely belted out some of the best 80s songs, leaving the audience in awe.
Young Gemma was brought to life by Molly Cheesley, while adult Gemma was played by Nina Wadia OBE, who you’ll 100% recognise from one show or another! Both delivered solid performances that rounded out the cast beautifully.
The ensemble were absolutely fantastic—full of energy and clearly having the time of their lives on stage. Chris Grahamson as adult Tim brought plenty of humour to his performance, with his rendition of Gold by Spandau Ballet getting lots of laughs. Meanwhile, Blake Tuke as young Tim was hilarious—his comedic timing was spot on, and that hair flick was priceless!
80s legend Sonia made a brilliant appearance, best known for her Eurovision hit Better the Devil You Know. She performed a few of her classic tracks and was front and centre for the spectacular megamix finale. It was an absolute party atmosphere—every single person was on their feet, singing, clapping, and dancing along. A proper feel-good ending to a fantastic night!
Now That’s What I Call A Musical is lighting up the Theatre Royal Brighton until Saturday, 7th December. Performances run on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings at 7:30 PM, with matinees on Thursday and Saturday at 2:30 PM, alongside evening shows at 7:30 PM.
