Grease is back in London until October 29th, 2022 at the Dominion Theatre, so if it’s the one that you want, then you had better book a ticket!
When I think of Grease, I instantly think of the 1978 film staring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, but what most people don’t realise is that it was a musical before being a film. Grease The Musical was created in 1971 by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey and more than 50 years later its still entertaining the masses.
I’m sure you already know the story, but a brief summary incase you have been living under a rock for 50 years. It’s 1950’s California and greaser Danny Zuko and Australian sweetheart Sandy Olsson have just spent a long hot summer together falling madly in love, but when the holidays are over the love affair comes to an end. Much to Danny’s surprise, when he returns to Rydell High, Sandy is the new girl but does the summer loving continue? You’ll have to see the show to find out!
Dan Partridge plays Danny Zuko, however when the show initially started I was a little confused as to who Danny was, as no one really massively stood out, but as soon as the first song started, I realised. And when Olivia Moore arrived on stage who plays Sandy, I was even more confused as she had dark hair . . . I honestly thought they would of put Moore in a blonde wig, so get that classic look – but maybe that’s just me comparing to the film?
Peter Andre I must say was sensational, he only popped in a few times during the first half as Vince Fontaine, but every time he did the crown went wild as you can imagine. But the second half is when Andre came alive! His role of Teen Angel was iconic, he owned the stage and received plenty of laughs from the audience.
The second half was definitely the better out of the two, Oliva Moore’s rendition of Hopelessly Devoted to You gave me goosebumps and the whole audience I think were in awe.
My local theatre, had Grease as there Christmas show in 2017, and it was honestly fantastic, so I was a little disappointed with the London show as I did think it would be better – that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it, I was just comparing it to what I had seen before.
Grease The Musical is a great allrounder, some greats acting and all the classic songs to get you up on your feet at the end of the show. Perfect for that work night out, or family show.
