Avenue Q Review | Theatre Royal Brighton

So I am currently writing this review whilst listening to “The Internet is for Porn” on Spotify which is a hilarious song from the multi award-winning Avenue Q puppet musical which I saw last night!

I haven’t laughed so much in a very long time! I took my parents along as it was their wedding anniversary and they absolutely LOVED It! So many of my friends have seen in multiple times, and I am so glad I got the chance to see it!

What’s it about?
First of all this is NOT a kid’s show! Do NOT let the puppets fool you!

Avenue Q tell the story of college graduate Princeton, who is short of money so heads to Avenue Q for a cheap apartment to rent, which is where he meets neighbours Kate (the girl next door), Lucy (the slut), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the internet entrepreneur), superintendent Gary Coleman (yes, Diff’rent Strokes Gary Coleman) and other new friends!

They are all struggling to find relationships, jobs, and most importantly there purpose in life! So follow their LAUGH OUT LOUD journey!

Puppets? Is it rude?
The show features puppets and human actors, which I didn’t think was going to work, but it really does! Classic puppet shows, the actors will be hidden behind a curtain but Avenue Q the actors are on stage and basically replicate what there puppet is doing which makes it even more hilarious!

The show won Best Musical at the 2004 Tony Awards, which is no surprise! Avenue Q is great for teens 14+ as it’s all about real life issues, sex, drinking, surfing the web for porn it really does have it all! And because they are only puppets, watching a sex scene with your parents doesn’t seem so bad!

The main cast is super small, but oh so talented! Moving from character to character so seamlessly! Cecily Redman who plays Kate Monster and Lucy the Slut was incredible! Her talking and singing voice was fantastic! And Tom Steedon who plays Nicky/Trekkie Monster and Bad Idea Bear was sensationally! Trekkie Monsters song “The Internet is for Porn” was my favourite song of the night!

Lawrence Smith who plays Princeton and Rob was equally fantastic! Smith’s facial expressions were fantastic, at times I didn’t know whether to watch his face or the puppets! Saori Oda plays Christmas Eve and had some comical scenes with on stage fiancé/husband Oliver Stanley as Brian!

Nicholas McLean plays Gary Coleman (yep the Gary Coleman who played Arnold Jackson in Diff’rent Strokes!) Megan Armstong played Mrs T/Bad Idea Bear and Second Arm (so the arm for Lucy Slut etc.) and ensemble cast includes Jasmine Beel, Ellis Dackombe, Chloe Gentles and Robbie Noonan all absolutely fantastic and glue the show together!
