Last night was the opening night of The Cher Show at The Theatre Royal Brighton, and what a night it was! The show is packed with legendary Cher classics such as, If I Could Turn Back Time, Strong Enough, Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves, I Got You Babe, and, the iconic 90s floor filler Believe.
Let’s cut to the chase . . . LOVED IT! 5* and ICONIC.
Brought to you by Tony award-winning writer Rick Elice, directed by Dame Arlene Phillips (Strictly Come Dancing Judge) and choreographed by double Strictly Come Dancing champion Oti Mabuse this show has all the right people to make it a night to remember.
I wasn’t sure whether this was going to just be a compilation of Cher classics throughout the night, more concert style like SIX The Musical, however I was happy to see it was a full-on musical with dialogue and scenes which I was happy about as I didn’t really know much about Cher before seeing the show, although I left feeling like I knew a lot more about Cher as a person.
You get three for the price of one at this show, as Cher is played by three phenomenal actresses ‘Babe’ = Young Cher played by Millie O’Connell, ‘Lady’ = Middle Aged Cher played by Danielle Steers and ‘Star’ = Do You Believe aged Cher played by Debbie Kurup all brining a slightly different sound to the Cher era they portrayed.
As I said each of these actresses were incredible, but for me Danielle Steers absolutely stole the show, her voice, mannerisms, way she carried herself on stage, and the little one liners throughout the show really got the audience laughing.
A few of my highlights from the show, the performance of Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) which is probably my favourite Cher song, the scenes from the Sonny & Cher era, Sonny has played by Guy Woolf during the performance we saw, and was very funny, and every time Danielle Steers opened her mouth, as it was honestly dreamy.
The staging I thought was great, very simple but you knew exactly what they were trying to portray, the scenes usually change with the years, and the costumes were fantastic, designed by Gabriella Slade who was responsible for the Spice World Tour and SIX The Musical.
Before the show I thought I only knew a few Cher songs but kept surprising myself throughout the night as I knew so many more. The audience was full of all age groups and demographic and I didn’t see a single person not on their feet at the end whilst all three Cher’s performed a medley of classics from the Pop Goddess herself.
So, It’s Time To Turn Back Time, and book tickets for The Cher Show! At The Theatre Royal Brighton until Saturday 12th November 2022 (Tue – Sat at 19:45), (Wed, Thu and Sat at 14:30), (Wed 2 Nov at 19:45 only) & (Sun at 17:00) – you won’t be disappointed!
