I was really excited to finally see The Woman in Black, especially since I’d missed it during its incredible 33-year run at the Fortune Theatre in London. It’s one of the West End’s most enduring ghost stories, second only to The Mousetrap, so catching the UK tour in Brighton felt like the perfect chance at last to experience the story for myself.
The Woman in Black tells the story of Arthur Kipps, a solicitor sent to the isolated Eel Marsh House to settle the affairs of a recently deceased client. While there, he begins to uncover the tragic history of the mysterious Woman in Black, whose vengeful presence haunts the area. As Kipps pieces together the past, he’s drawn into a chilling tale of loss, anger, and the lingering power of a spirit determined never to be forgotten.
The cast consisted of just two performers, John Mackay as Arthur Kipps and Daniel Burke as The Actor, and honestly, that’s all the production needed. The pair were absolutely transfixing, carrying the entire story with such skill and presence that I couldn’t take my eyes off them. Their performances were fantastic from start to finish.
Two actors, one ghost, and a theatre full of screams — The Woman in Black is as chilling as ever.
John Mackay’s delivery was impeccable. I was blown away by how effortlessly he shifted from character to character, nailing each accent and set of mannerisms with total precision. It was a truly standout performance that anchored the whole production.
The very simple set, combined with some clever lighting and sound effects, draws you straight into the dark shadows and all the spookiness of the story. It doesn’t take much for the atmosphere to wrap around you, and judging by the multiple screams from the audience (mine included!), it worked incredibly well.
The Woman in Black haunts Theatre Royal Brighton until Saturday 22nd November 2025, with evening performances at 7:30pm on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and matinees at 2:30pm on Thursday and Saturday. If you’re brave enough to step into the shadows, you can book your tickets HERE
