Last night I attended the Hawth Theatre in Crawley for the press night of Dirty Dancing . . . I’m sure you’ve all heard of the smash hit 1987 film starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey! I know I have as my mum is literally obsessed with the film! I haven’t actually seen the film the whole way through so I went into the theatre vaguely knowing the storyline which I think is great as I have nothing to compare it to.
What’s It About? For those who haven’t seen the film/show or know the story, here is a quick little explanation! Set in the summer of 1963, 17-year-old Frances otherwise known as ‘Baby’ is on holiday in New York’s Catskill Mountains with her older sister and parents. Bored of normal resort activities, Baby stumbles across an all-night dance party at the staff quarters when she meets resident dance instructor Johnny Castle. Her life changes as she becomes Johnny’s leading lady both on-stage and off who together face the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives.
Although I haven’t actually seen the film, I am fully aware of how popular it is and obviously and the classic songs featured including “Hungry Eyes”, “Hey Baby”, “Do You Love Me?” and the absolute classic “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” which I swear gets played at the end of every 50 something years old ladies party at the end of the night LOL!
The Show was FANTASTIC! Baby is played by Katie Eccles who’s learning to dance scenes were hilarious and had the whole audience laughing! The character of Johnny made famous by the late Patrick Swayze was played by Lewis Griffiths who my mum said sounded exactly like Swayze in the film (she should know as I think she watches the film weekly!) Griffith’s dancing was exceptional! So much energy on stage!
The talent competition scene featuring Baby’s sister Lisa played by Lizzie Ottley was one of my favourite scenes, SO SO funny. I also need to mention Michael Kent and Gabby Antrobus who play Billy and Elizabeth who sing the final song “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” while Baby and Johnny are dancing which was a great finale.
Show History – Dirty Dancing on Stage originally debuted in Australia 13 years ago! And has since become a worldwide phenomenon with productions staged in New Zealand, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, South Africa, Hong Kong, Singapore and throughout Europe.
The show last night ended with a standing ovation and roaring cheers! The audience was on their feet singing and dancing a lot to the final song!
I highly recommend the show! Book tickets fast as this musical phenomenon is selling out fast!
